NMC takes step against suicides, forms national task force to address mental health problems among medical students

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has taken decisive action to tackle depression and suicide among medical students by forming a specialized task force. This 15-member task force, which includes Dr. B M Suresh, a Professor at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS), will be charged with the crucial responsibility of examining the root causes of these mental health issues and proposing evidence-based strategies to address them.

The initiative comes as a response to growing concerns over the mental health of medical students, a trend that has unfortunately led to instances of depression and suicide among this vulnerable population. The aim of the task force is to comprehensively study existing data and literature on mental health and suicide among medical students. By analyzing contributing factors and recommending evidence-based strategies, the task force will seek to improve mental health and reduce the occurrence of suicides.

To facilitate its work, the task force will visit colleges where incidents of suicide have been reported. A comprehensive report detailing key findings and actionable recommendations is expected to be submitted by May 31, 2024. In addition, monthly progress reports will be provided to the anti-ragging cell.

The task force is committed to its mission and will hold regular meetings, whether virtual or in person, as needed. It also has the option to visit the medical colleges where incidents of suicide have occurred to better understand the on-ground situation.
